Why Pets Are Happier Staying Home While You're Away

Because there's no place like home — especially for our furry family members!

Planning a vacation, weekend getaway, or even a long day away from home? One of the biggest concerns for pet owners is making sure their beloved pets are happy, safe, and comfortable while they're gone.

While boarding facilities can be a good option for some pets, many dogs and cats feel more relaxed in the comfort of their own homes. That's where in-home pet sitting can make all the difference!

           1. Familiar Surroundings Mean Less Stress

Pets thrive on familiarity and routine. Their favorite sleeping spots, familiar smells, toys, and cozy blankets all provide a sense of security.

Being in an unfamiliar environment with new sounds, smells, and other animals can sometimes cause anxiety, especially for senior pets or those who are naturally shy.

With in-home pet sitting, your furry friend gets to stay right where they feel safest —

           home sweet home!

           2. Keeping Their Daily Routine

Just like people, pets love their routines!

Whether it's breakfast at a certain time, a favorite afternoon walk, or a little playtime before settling down, maintaining those familiar activities helps pets feel comfortable while their families are away.

A dependable pet sitter can help keep things running smoothly by following your pet's normal feeding schedule, providing fresh water, offering potty breaks, and giving them the attention they're accustomed to.

A familiar routine can make your absence a little easier on your pet.

           3. Personalized Love and Attention

Every pet has a unique personality!

Some dogs love playing fetch and going for walks, while others would rather curl up beside someone for a little extra affection. Cats may enjoy chasing their favorite toys, watching birds through the window, or simply having someone nearby.

In-home pet sitting allows visits to be tailored to your pet's individual needs and personality.

At Max and Friends Pet Care, I believe every pet deserves patience, kindness, and plenty of love. Whether your furry friend is energetic, shy, playful, or a little spoiled, they're treated like family!

           4. Less Exposure to Unfamiliar Animals

Boarding facilities often have multiple animals staying in the same location. Although many facilities take precautions to keep pets healthy and safe, shared environments can increase exposure to contagious illnesses.

Keeping your pet at home reduces unnecessary contact with unfamiliar animals and allows them to enjoy their own clean, comfortable surroundings.

This can be especially beneficial for older pets, puppies, and animals with certain health concerns.

           5. Extra Peace of Mind for Pet Parents

Let's face it — leaving our pets behind is never easy!

One of the greatest benefits of having a trusted pet sitter is knowing someone is checking on your furry family members while you're away.

Regular visits help ensure your pets have fresh food and water, receive attention and exercise, and are doing well.

And there's nothing quite like receiving a sweet photo or update showing your pet happy and comfortable at home!

Peace of mind for you and loving care for them — that's what it's all about.

           6. A Little Extra Comfort for Senior and Special-Needs Pets

Older pets and those with special needs often benefit from familiar surroundings.

Changes in environment can be particularly challenging for pets with mobility limitations, anxiety, or established daily routines.

Staying home allows them to rest in their favorite places, avoid unnecessary travel, and receive care suited to their individual needs.

Sometimes, the simplest comforts make the biggest difference.

Home Is Where Their Heart Is ❤️

Our pets aren't just animals — they're family. And when we can't be there ourselves, we want them to feel as loved and cared for as possible.

In-home pet sitting offers a wonderful way to help pets maintain their routines, enjoy familiar surroundings, and receive personalized attention while their families are away.

At Max and Friends Pet Care, your pets' happiness, safety, and comfort are always my priority.

Whether you're heading out of town or simply need someone to stop by during a busy day, I'd love to help care for your furry family members!

Halloween can be a lot of fun for us, but for our pets, it can sometimes be a little overwhelming. Between the doorbell ringing, unfamiliar costumes, decorations, and tempting treats, there are plenty of things pet parents should keep in mind.

Here are a few simple ways to help keep your dogs and cats safe and comfortable this Halloween.

Keep the Candy Out of Reach

Chocolate can be dangerous for dogs and cats, and sugar-free candy may contain xylitol, which is extremely toxic to dogs. Candy wrappers can also cause problems if swallowed.

Keep Halloween treats somewhere your pets can't reach—even if you have a determined counter-surfer!

           Create a Quiet, Comfortable Space

Some pets love visitors, while others would rather hide until the excitement is over. Constant doorbell ringing, knocking, and people in costumes can be stressful, especially for shy or anxious pets.

Give your pet a quiet place away from the front door with their bed, favorite blanket, toys, and fresh water. A little background music or television may also help cover some of the outside noise.

Be Extra Careful Around the Front Door

With trick-or-treaters coming and going, Halloween can be an easy night for a dog or cat to slip outside unnoticed.

Before the evening gets busy, make sure your pet's ID tag is secure and their microchip information is current. If your pet tends to rush the door, keeping them in another room or behind a secure gate may be the safest choice.

           Watch Those Decorations

Candles, electrical cords, string lights, fake spiderwebs, and small decorations can all be tempting to curious pets.

Consider battery-operated candles instead of open flames, and keep cords and decorations where pets can't chew on them or become tangled.

           Costumes Aren't for Every Pet

Some pets don't mind dressing up, but others clearly do!

If your pet wears a costume, make sure it isn't too tight, doesn't restrict movement or breathing, and doesn't have small pieces they could chew off and swallow. If your pet seems uncomfortable, stressed, or keeps trying to remove it, skip the costume. A cute Halloween bandana can be just as festive.

           Keep Outdoor Cats Inside

Halloween night brings extra traffic, noise, strangers, and activity. If you have a cat that normally spends time outdoors, Halloween is a good night to keep them safely inside.

           Don't Forget About Their Routine

With all the Halloween excitement, try to keep feeding times, potty breaks, walks, and bedtime as normal as possible. Familiar routines can help pets feel secure when everything around them seems different.

A Safe Halloween Is a Happy Halloween

A little preparation can make Halloween much more enjoyable for both you and your pets. Pay attention to what makes your individual pet comfortable, and don't feel like they have to participate in all the festivities.

Sometimes the happiest Halloween for a pet is simply curling up in their favorite spot while all the excitement happens somewhere else.

Helping Shy Pets Feel Comfortable With a New Sitter

Some pets are ready to make a new friend the moment someone walks through the door. Others need time to watch, sniff, and decide whether they feel comfortable. If your dog or cat is shy around new people, leaving them with a pet sitter can feel especially hard.

The first thing I want you to know is that your pet doesn’t have to be outgoing to be cared for well. A quiet pet deserves the same attention and kindness as one who can’t wait to say hello. My job is to learn what helps your pet feel safe and let trust build at their pace.

Getting to know your pet before you leave

It helps to tell me what your pet is like when they meet someone new. Do they usually hide at first? Are they more comfortable if a visitor ignores them for a little while? Is there a favorite treat or toy that helps them relax? You know your pet best, and those details make a difference.

I also like to know about their usual routine: when they eat, where they like to rest, and how they let you know they need to go outside. Familiar routines can be comforting when their person is away.

Letting your pet set the pace

A shy pet may need space during the first visit. I won’t expect them to come over for pets or play right away. Sometimes the best start is to speak softly, move calmly, take care of their food and water, and let them observe me from a spot where they feel secure.

If they choose to come closer, I’ll let them decide how much interaction they want. If they prefer to keep their distance, that’s okay too. We can still have a successful visit without forcing a greeting.

           Small steps are worth celebrating

Trust may look different for every pet. One dog might come over for a sniff after a few minutes. A cat might stay tucked away but eat their dinner once the house is quiet again. Another pet may gradually become more relaxed over several visits.

I don’t measure a good visit by how many cuddles I get. I’m looking at whether your pet’s needs are met and whether I can help them feel comfortable in their own home.

           Keeping you updated

I know it can be worrying to leave a shy pet behind. I’ll send updates so you know how the visit went, including how your pet seemed and whether they ate, went outside, or spent time with me. Even if they aren’t ready to pose for a close-up photo, I’ll let you know how they’re doing.

Every pet has their own personality, and I love getting to know what makes each one feel at ease. If your dog or cat takes a little extra time to warm up, that’s perfectly okay with me.

Why Drop-In Pet Care Can Be Less Stressful Than Boarding

When you’re planning a trip or spending a long day away from home, one of the biggest concerns is making sure your pets are happy, comfortable, and well cared for while you’re gone.

For many pets, staying right where they’re most comfortable — at home — can make being away from their family a little easier.

           The Comfort of Home

Pets are creatures of habit. They know their favorite sleeping spots, where their food and water bowls are, which window has the best view, and exactly where they like to curl up at the end of the day.

Boarding means adjusting to an unfamiliar environment filled with new sights, smells, sounds, animals, and people. Some pets handle that change well, but for others, it can be stressful.

With drop-in pet care, your pet gets to stay in the place they know best — home.

           Keeping Their Normal Routine

Most pets thrive on routine. They know when breakfast should arrive, when it’s time to go outside, and when they usually get their favorite treats or playtime.

Drop-in visits allow your pet’s normal routine to continue as closely as possible while you’re away. Meals can be served at their usual times, dogs can have their regular potty breaks or walks, and cats can keep doing what cats do best — enjoying their home on their own terms.

Keeping things familiar can help make your absence feel like less of a disruption.

           One-on-One Attention

One of the things I love most about caring for pets in their own homes is getting to spend individual time with them.

Every pet is different. Some dogs are ready to grab a toy the second I walk through the door. Others just want belly rubs and companionship. Some cats greet me immediately, while others prefer to watch me from a safe distance until they decide I’ve earned their trust.

Drop-in care allows that time to be centered around

your pet and what makes them comfortable.

           It’s Not Just for Dogs

Drop-in pet care can be a great option for cats, too.

Cats are often especially attached to their surroundings and may be much happier remaining at home rather than being transported somewhere unfamiliar. During visits, they can receive fresh food and water, litter box care, playtime, affection, and a little company — while still getting to sleep in their favorite spot afterward.

Peace of Mind While You’re Away

Leaving a pet behind is never easy. Knowing that someone is checking on them, spending time with them, and making sure they have what they need can make being away a little easier for you, too.

For some pets, boarding is a perfectly good option. But for pets who are happiest in familiar surroundings, in-home drop-in care can provide the comfort, routine, and personal attention they need while their family is away.

           Max and Friends Pet Care

, my goal is simple: to care for your pets in their own home with the same patience, kindness, and attention I would want for my own.

Because sometimes, there really is no place like home.

Keeping Senior Pets Comfortable While You're Away

Leaving your pets behind when you travel is never easy, and it can be especially difficult when you have a senior pet. As our pets get older, their needs can change. They may move a little slower, sleep a little more, need medication, or simply feel more comfortable when life follows the routine they know.

For many senior pets, staying in their own home while their family is away can be a wonderful option. Instead of adjusting to an unfamiliar environment, they can remain surrounded by their own beds, toys, smells, and favorite places to relax.

Here are a few ways to help make your time away easier and more comfortable for your older companion.

Keep Their Routine as Normal as Possible

Senior pets often thrive on routine. They know when breakfast is coming, when it’s time to go outside, and even where they expect to settle down for an afternoon nap.

Before you leave, give your pet sitter a good idea of your pet’s normal schedule. Include feeding times, potty routines, walks, medications, treats, and anything else your pet expects throughout the day.

Keeping those familiar routines in place can provide reassurance when their favorite person isn’t home.

           Give Them Plenty of Time

Older pets sometimes need us to slow down with them.

A senior dog may take a little longer getting up or need a leisurely trip outside rather than a fast-paced walk. They may want to stop and sniff along the way, and that’s perfectly okay.

Senior cats can have their own preferences, too. Some may want attention and affection, while others are happiest having someone nearby while they relax in their favorite spot.

Good senior pet care isn’t about rushing through a checklist. It’s about paying attention to what that particular pet needs.

Make Food, Water and Favorite Spots Easy to Reach

Arthritis and other age-related changes can make things that were once easy more difficult. Before leaving town, take a look at your home from your senior pet’s perspective.

Make sure food and water are easy to reach and that your pet doesn’t have to navigate unnecessary stairs or slippery floors to get to the places they use most.

Keep their favorite bed, blankets, and toys where they normally expect to find them. Familiar surroundings can be very comforting.

           Leave Clear Medication Instructions

If your pet takes medication, leave detailed written instructions for your pet sitter. Include the medication name, dosage, time it should be given, and how you normally give it.

Does your dog happily take a pill hidden in a treat? Does your cat require a special technique? Those little details are important!

It’s also a good idea to leave your veterinarian’s contact information along with instructions about who should be contacted if there is an emergency.

Tell Your Pet Sitter What’s “Normal”

One of the most helpful things you can do is explain what is normal

           for your pet.

Maybe your older dog always sleeps until late morning. Perhaps your cat doesn’t eat much at breakfast but makes up for it later. Maybe your dog has a funny little limp after getting up from a long nap that you’ve already discussed with your veterinarian.

Knowing these things helps a pet sitter recognize when something truly seems different.

You know your pet better than anyone, so don’t worry about giving too much information. Those little details can be incredibly helpful.

           Don’t Forget the Extra Love

            ❤️

Taking care of a senior pet isn’t only about food, water, medications, and potty breaks.

Sometimes what they need most is companionship.

It might mean sitting beside them for a few extra minutes, giving belly rubs, scratching their favorite spot, talking to them, or simply keeping them company while they rest.

Senior pets may not have the energy they once did, but they still need attention and affection.

           The Comfort of Home

Every pet is different, but many senior pets are happiest in the place they know best—their own home.

They can sleep in their favorite spot, follow their regular routine, and avoid the stress that may come with being transported somewhere unfamiliar.

And while nothing completely replaces having you there, having someone they can become familiar and comfortable with checking on them can make your time away much easier on both of you.

At Max and Friends Pet Care, I believe senior pets deserve patience, gentleness, and care that fits their individual needs. Whether that means a slower walk, an extra potty break, medication, or simply a little more time spent giving them attention, I’m happy to give our older furry friends the extra TLC they deserve.

After all, they’ve spent so many years loving and taking care of us. They deserve a little extra love in return. ❤️

Why Your Puppy Needs a Daily Check-In

Puppies may be small (like my sweet Lilly I have the priviledge of checking on), but their needs do not wait for the end of your workday. Even when you are away for only part of the day, a puppy benefits from a reliable person who can offer food, fresh water, a potty break, and a little calm attention.

A once-a-day visit gives your puppy a comfortable pause in the day instead of asking them to wait, worry, or entertain themselves for too long. With a simple plan and a trusted helper, daily drop-in care can support healthy routines while giving you peace of mind.

           A reassuring starting point:

One dependable check-in can make a big difference. If your puppy is very young or still having frequent accidents, they may need more than one visit—use their age, bladder control, and veterinarian’s guidance to choose the right schedule.

Puppies Need Support During the Day

Young puppies are still learning how to eat, rest, play, and use the bathroom. They often cannot comfortably hold their bladder for a full workday, and long stretches alone can make the day feel confusing or overwhelming. A daytime visit meets those needs when they matter most.

The goal is not to fill every minute with activity. It is to give your puppy a predictable rhythm: a quiet greeting, the right meal if one is due, fresh water, time outside, and a chance to settle again. That steady pattern helps your puppy feel secure while they learn that you will always come back.

            Comfort

             — A familiar person breaks up a long period alone and offers gentle reassurance.

            Energy

             — A short potty trip and a little age-appropriate play can prevent restlessness from building.

            Consistency

             — Similar visit times help your puppy understand what to expect each day.

️ Small Tasks That Keep the Routine Steady

A good check-in does not need to be complicated. The visitor follows the routine you have already established and keeps the focus on your puppy’s basic needs. Depending on the timing of your puppy’s meals, the visit might look like this

           Food:

Serves the measured portion at the usual time.

Prevents skipped meals and keeps feeding predictable.

           Fresh water:

Refills the bowl and checks that it is clean.

Supports hydration, especially after play or a warm morning.

           Potty break:

Lets the puppy out to the usual spot and waits long enough for them to go.

Reduces discomfort and reinforces the right place to potty.

           Routine:

Offers a little calm play, praise, or company before settling the puppy.

Helps the day feel familiar rather than lonely or unpredictable.

Daily Visits Make Good Habits Easier

Every successful potty trip is a small lesson. When a visitor takes your puppy out before an accident is likely, rewards the right behavior, and returns them to a calm space, they help build the habits you are practicing at home. Fewer accidents also make the process less frustrating for everyone.

A check-in can prevent boredom without turning into an exciting party. A few minutes of gentle play, a food puzzle you have already approved, or quiet companionship may be all your puppy needs before naptime. The right amount of activity helps them practice settling, not just staying busy.

Think of the visit as a reset:

Your puppy gets a chance to eat, drink, potty, and reconnect with a trusted person. Then they can return to rest with a more comfortable body and a calmer mind.

A Trusted Visitor Can Notice Changes

Daily contact also gives another caring adult a chance to notice what you might miss from a distance. A visitor can tell you if your puppy refuses food, drinks much more than usual, has diarrhea, seems unusually tired, is limping, or is acting fearful or withdrawn.

Ask the visitor to send a brief update after each check-in: whether your puppy ate, drank, pottied, and seemed like themselves. This simple record can reveal patterns early and help you decide when to call your veterinarian. It also reassures you that the visit happened as planned.

Make the Routine Easy to Follow

The best daily helper is not expected to guess. Before the first visit, show them where everything is and walk through the routine once. Keep supplies together so the check-in stays simple and your puppy gets consistent care.

Write down the visit window, meal time, portion size, and treat limit.

Leave a clean water bowl, measured food, waste bags, leash, and any approved toy in one labeled spot.

Explain the potty door, outdoor area, boundaries, and what to do if your puppy gets distracted.

Share your puppy’s normal eating, sleeping, and bathroom patterns.

Provide your phone number, a backup contact, and your veterinarian’s information.

Explain how to secure doors and gates so your puppy cannot slip away.

Ask the visitor to confirm the puppy is safely settled before leaving.

           Keep instructions short and visible.

A one-page note is usually enough. Include what to do if your puppy has an accident, refuses food, seems sick, or cannot be found in the usual safe area. A quick meet-and-greet also helps your puppy recognize the visitor before you are away.

A Little Help Goes a Long Way

A once-a-day check-in gives your puppy the essentials they need during the day: food, fresh water, a timely potty break, and a familiar routine. It can support training, reduce boredom and stress, and give you an extra set of eyes on your puppy’s wellbeing.

Choose someone you trust, prepare the routine in advance, and start with a visit schedule that fits your puppy’s age and needs. That small daily promise can help your puppy feel safe, comfortable, and ready to keep learning.

Why Consistency With Your Pet Sitter Matters Most When You’re on Vacation

You can plan the perfect trip, but if your pet’s day-to-day care feels unpredictable, it’s hard to truly relax. For most animals, consistency is comfort: familiar timing, familiar cues, familiar handling, and a familiar presence in their space.

When you hire the same sitter (or a tightly coordinated team) to follow the same routine each visit, you’re not just checking a box—you’re supporting your pet’s routine, comfort, safety, and your own peace of mind while you’re away.

Routine Keeps Pets Regulated (and Prevents Small Issues From Becoming Big Ones)

Pets don’t measure time the way we do, but they absolutely feel patterns. A predictable schedule helps regulate digestion, energy levels, and stress—especially for animals that are sensitive, senior, or managing health needs.

Consistency matters in the details people often overlook:

Meal timing & portions — Sudden changes can lead to stomach upset, skipped meals, or food-related anxiety.

Potty breaks & litter care — Reliable timing reduces accidents, discomfort, and risk of UTIs (particularly in cats).

Medication routines — The right dose at the right time, given the same way, reduces missed meds and resistance.

Exercise patterns — A dog used to morning walks often becomes restless without them; an under-exercised dog is also more likely to get into trouble.

The benefit of a consistent sitter is that they learn your pet’s “normal.” They notice when something is off—like a dog who suddenly slows down on a route, or a cat who’s usually social but starts hiding. That baseline is powerful, because it makes changes easier to spot and address quickly.

Familiar Care Builds Comfort—and Comfort Improves Safety

Vacation can be stressful for pets, even in their own home. A new person, new voice, and new way of doing things can feel like a disruption—especially for shy pets, rescues, or animals who are protective of their space.

When the sitter is consistent, your pet experiences the visit as part of a familiar pattern rather than a new event. That lowers stress and helps prevent common vacation-time problems:

Door safety — A sitter who knows your pet’s habits is less likely to trigger a dash-out-the-door moment.

Leash and harness security — The same person uses the same fit checks and handling style every time.

Home routines — Gates, crates, feeding stations, alarm routines, and “where things go” stay consistent, reducing mistakes.

Behavior stability — Predictable interactions reduce jumping, mouthing, resource guarding, and fear responses that can happen with unfamiliar handling.

           Key idea:

The goal isn’t to “entertain” your pet with novelty—it’s to keep life feeling normal until you’re home again. Normal is what helps pets settle, rest, and stay safe.

Your Peace of Mind Comes From Knowing Exactly What’s Happening at Home

Consistency isn’t only for your pet—it’s for you. When the care plan is repeatable, communication becomes clearer, expectations stay aligned, and you spend less time wondering “Did that get done?” and more time enjoying your trip.

A dependable local service can make consistency easier because it’s built into the process. For example, Max & Friends Pet Care prioritizes steady scheduling, routine-based visits, and clear updates—so your pet’s day stays predictable and your information stays reliable. That kind of structure matters when you’re out of town and need care to be calm, precise, and on time.

If you want to set your sitter (and your pet) up for success, focus on these practical consistency points before you leave:

Write down the routine (feeding, potty breaks/litter, walks, meds, and any “must-follow” house rules).

Keep supplies in predictable places so the sitter can repeat the same steps each visit without guessing.

Agree on communication (how often updates come, what they include, and who to contact for decisions).

Confirm safety procedures (leash checks, door/gate rules, alarm instructions, and emergency vet info).

           Closing Takeaway

The best vacation pet care doesn’t feel flashy—it feels steady. When your sitter is consistent, your pet stays grounded in routine, stress stays lower, safety stays higher, and you get the real gift of travel: the ability to be present, knowing your pet is in reliable hands.

How to set your home and your pets up for a drop in sitter

Leaving your pet for a few short visits can feel simple—until you start wondering whether the sitter will find the food, understand the alarm, or know what that unusual bark means. A little preparation turns those unknowns into a calm, predictable routine for everyone.

Before you leave, focus on four things: your pet’s comfort, the sitter’s access to essentials, a safe and tidy home, and instructions that are easy to follow. The goal is not to plan every second. It is to make the important details obvious.

Prepare Your Pet Before the First Visit

Start with your pet’s emotional needs. If possible, arrange a brief meet-and-greet before the first drop-in so your animal can see, smell, and hear the sitter while you are still present. Ask the sitter to offer a familiar treat or toy, but let your pet approach at its own pace. A nervous dog may need a quiet greeting, while a shy cat may prefer that the sitter sit nearby without reaching for it.

On the day you leave, keep the usual rhythm. Give your pet its normal meal, walk, play session, or bathroom break rather than introducing a new food or an unusually tiring activity. A little exercise can help an active dog settle, but avoid anything that could cause soreness or stomach upset while you are away.

            Check the basics

             — Confirm that collars fit, identification tags are attached, and your pet has access to fresh water.

            Share health details

             — Write down allergies, mobility concerns, recent symptoms, appetite changes, and the name and phone number of your veterinarian.

            Explain behavior

             — Mention triggers such as doorbells, strangers, loud noises, guarding, hiding, or attempts to bolt through an open door.

           Reassurance for pet owners:

Your sitter does not need to make a nervous pet social. A calm check that food, water, bathroom needs, and safety are covered is a successful visit—even if your pet spends it under the bed.

State the exact dose, method, and latest safe time for any medicine.

Create a Clearly Labeled Supply Station

           Put essentials together:

Set out food, treats, bowls, medications, measuring cups, leashes, harnesses, waste bags, litter, litter liners, toys, towels, and cleaning supplies in one easy-to-find area. Use separate containers or labels if multiple pets eat different food or need different medication. Pre-portioning meals removes guesswork and helps prevent accidental overfeeding.

Leave a spare key or access code exactly as the sitter will use it. If the key is hidden outside, choose a secure location and explain how to retrieve and return it. Keep a flashlight near the entrance if visits may happen after dark. Put the carrier, extra litter, paper towels, enzyme cleaner, and a trash bag somewhere the sitter can reach without opening private cabinets.

Do not hide important supplies in several rooms. A simple note such as “Pet station: laundry room shelf, left bin” is more useful than a long scavenger hunt.

Make the Home Safe, Accessible, and Comfortable

Walk through the home from your pet’s point of view. Remove food, medications, small objects, cords, and plants that could be chewed or swallowed. Close windows securely, check screens, and block access to balconies, fireplaces, garages, or rooms where your pet should not roam. Secure trash cans and keep cleaning products out of reach.

Make the entry plan specific. Tell the sitter which door to use, where shoes or coats can go, and whether the pet should be kept behind a gate before the door opens. For dogs who dash, use a two-step routine: close the outside door, then open the interior gate. For cats, explain which doors must remain closed so they cannot slip into a closet, basement, or garage.

If you have a security system, write the exact steps for disarming and rearming it, including what to do if the alarm beeps or the code fails. Mention smart locks, doorbell cameras, automatic feeders, and any devices that should not be unplugged. Test the key, code, gate, and alarm instructions before you leave.

Tidy the paths the sitter will use. Clear floors near food and litter areas, scoop the litter box, empty indoor waste bins, wash food bowls, and place fresh towels where messes are most likely. Move fragile items away from a wagging tail and leave a comfortable, familiar resting place available.

           Emergency contacts to post:

Your phone number, a backup contact, veterinarian, nearest emergency clinic, building manager, and the location of the first-aid kit and fire extinguisher.

Write Instructions the Sitter Can Use Quickly

Keep written instructions to one or two pages. Put the most important information first, and use short headings instead of a long story. A strong note answers five questions: What does my pet eat? What does my pet need during this visit? What should I watch for? What should I do if something goes wrong? How do I reach the owner?

Include the visit window, feeding amounts, treat limits, medication directions, bathroom routine, and the location of every essential supply. Add a recent photo and a sentence describing what “normal” looks like—for example, “Milo usually hides for ten minutes, then comes out when the room is quiet.” Note any behaviors that require action, such as repeated vomiting, trouble breathing, inability to urinate, injury, or an escaped pet. Tell the sitter when to call you and when to contact the veterinarian immediately.

For nervous pets, give the sitter a low-pressure plan: enter quietly, avoid forced handling, use a familiar sound or treat, and confirm food and water even if the pet stays hidden. For multi-pet homes, explain where each animal eats, whether they must be separated, which doors or gates to use, and how to confirm that every pet has been seen. Never assume the sitter will remember which identical bowl belongs to which animal.

For special routines, describe the nonnegotiables and the flexible parts. A diabetic pet may need exact timing, while a cat’s play session may be shortened if it is hiding. If a pet needs a muzzle, mobility support, inhaler, pill pocket, or crate rest, demonstrate the process in advance and leave supplies ready.

            Visit times and expected duration

Food, treats, water, medication, and bathroom instructions

Access, alarm, gate, and escape-prevention steps

Emergency contacts and clear “call me if” situations

           ✅ Do One Final Walk-Through

The best preparation is a quick test run. Ask yourself whether a sitter arriving tired, in a hurry, or after dark could find the supplies, enter safely, and understand your pet’s needs without calling you for every detail. Send the instructions digitally as a backup, but leave a printed copy where it is visible.

           Before you go, confirm:

Food, water, treats, and medications are measured and labeled.

Leashes, keys, litter supplies, waste bags, toys, and cleaning items are easy to find.

Doors, gates, windows, alarms, and escape-prevention steps have been tested.

The home is tidy enough for safe, comfortable movement.

The sitter has written instructions, emergency contacts, and permission to seek veterinary care if needed.

Make a simple prep checklist before you leave, then use it every time. A few minutes of organization can give your pet a familiar visit—and give you a much calmer trip.
